• Hippodrome - The Byzantine emperors cherished spending afternoons at the chariot races, and this rectangular arena next to Sultanahmet Park was their preferred venue. This vast underground cistern, built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (527–565), was commonly referred to as the “Yerebatan Palace” due to the marble columns rising from the water, creating the illusion of a palace. It is also known as the Basilica Cistern because a basilica once stood at the site where the cistern was constructed.
