Potbelly Hill - Göbeklitepe, meaning “belly hill,” is the oldest known temple in human history and the first religious center on earth. Approximately 20 temples have been discovered in the area, with six temples excavated so far. The soil level at the site indicates that the building was intentionally buried by humans, not by natural causes. Göbeklitepe was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018. Visitors can see at least 15 structures and over 200 obelisks, T-shaped columns ranging from 3 to 6 meters in height, believed to represent stylized human figures. The presence of a 3-dimensional lion relief suggests that lions may have lived in Anatolia during the Neolithic period.
The discovery of Göbeklitepe suggests that the transition to settled life was influenced by religious practices rather than agriculture. Prior to this discovery, history books stated that settled life began with the advent of farming and animal husbandry.
- Sanliurfa - Sanlıurfa Archaeological Museum: After visiting Göbekli Tepe, explore the Sanlıurfa Archaeological Museum to delve deeper into the region’s historical artifacts.
Visitors to the museum can enjoy a variety of intriguing exhibits, including the world’s oldest statue, a replica of the Göbeklitepe D Temple, the original Nevali Çori Temple, numerous period animations, a Prophet Abraham Animation, around 10,000 artifacts, and some of the world’s most beautiful mosaics at the New Şanlıurfa Museum.
- Cave of Abraham - Discover the beauty of Abraham Pool and its cave through scenic views and nature walks. Balıklıgol, the Pool of Abraham, is renowned for its significance in Jewish and Islamic legends, where it is believed that Nimrod cast Abraham into a fire.
The Cave of Abraham is a well-known pilgrimage site in Urfa, believed to be the birthplace of Prophet Abraham. Pilgrims visit to pray and honor one of history’s most esteemed prophets. The tyrant King Nimrod ordered the killing of all newborns upon learning of Abraham’s impending birth, leading Abraham to spend about ten years in the cave for safety.
A prayer area has been established inside the cave, with the exact birthplace of Abraham protected by a glass enclosure. There are also faucets inside the cave for devotees to wash their hands with holy water. To enter the cave, visitors must pass through the same courtyard as the Mevlid-I Halil Mosque.
