Aran Island Ferries– An incredible way to experience the Aran Islands! - We were in Ireland celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and Inish Mór was one of the highlights of our 10 day tour. Aodán went above and beyond, saved the day and got us aboard at the last minute. He then checked back with us to see if we needed anything and to make sure we had enjoyed our trip. I would highly recommend Aran Island Ferries. The trip over to Inis Mór was smooth, the island was a treasure trove of ancient historical sites and geological wonders, and the breath-taking, up-close views of the Cliffs of Moher, from the water, on the return trip were absolutely stunning.

Means to an end - It’s a ferry. It takes about 35 minutes each way. It’s around €30 return. They have airplane type seats all facing one way. It was quite rocky at sea a few minutes out of the safety of the harbour each way even on a relatively calm day. We sat inside on the way out and outside on the way back. There’s little interaction with crew and guests. They do sell refreshments but apart from tea and cans of soft drinks I’ve no idea as I didn’t get up to look. There’s a good amount of thrash bins to use. I did use the very basic restroom aboard which wasn’t a pleasant experience but not dreadful. Once on Aran our most westerly place the next land due west is North America.

Very smooth experience - Booking the tickets online was very easy, sufficient parking was available for 7 Euros only a short walk away, boarding and deboarding went smoothly and on time. What more can I ask? The Atlantic Ocean was pretty calm the day I took the ferry from Rossaveel to Inis Mor, so I can't speak to their performance on windier days.

Experience worth having. - The outward ferry found rough sea and is the route was dancer, not recommended for those suffering from seasickness. Wonderful day, we found perfect weather and although very windy we could get around the island with rented bikes at the port. Recommendation to rent the electric ones because there are climbs and the path if you want to visit everything is quite long and tiring. Wonderful experience. On the way back although missed the ferry because we were late they did not make a fuss and without any surcharge allowed us to travel on the next one.

Rain didn’t bother us - The boat ride over to island was nice. We found someone to drive us around and show us sites. He was very entertaining. Lunch on island was terrific. Did shopping and was able to send back to states. All in all it was wonderful day.

Only if you can brave the waves - For the love of god take Dramamine! Unless you’re a weathered sailor, you will find this ride a bit rough. Young children especially had a tough time and it was apparently a very average crossing. The staff are quick to hand out plastic bags but be prepared, the seas are always a bit rough. Once on the island you will be inundated by “tours” but many seem to be taxi drivers. Book something ahead so you’re not left at the mercy of your drivers timetable. It was very crowded and I felt badly for people attempting to ride bikes on the tiny, crowded lanes.

Very bad - They staff pulled up the ramp in front of me as they talked on land to me saying the boat is full . I had a 4pm booking and was there before 4pm. Ruined my whole evening plans .

Lack of flexibility to change booking in the face of storm and possible cancelled sailing. - Found out that the weather was going to be very stormy on the day of the crossing. Since my wife and two children suffer very badly from travel sickness I tried to change the sailing to the following day. I was told that changing our sailing would not be possible "with no exceptions" and I would have to purchase completely new tickets at over €170, since it was less than 24 hours before the sailing was due. We reluctantly decided to travel under our original booking which we ended up regretting. On the day of the sailing the ferry from Doolin was cancelled, but for some reason Rosaveel wasn't. The seas were very rough and many on board were sick including my wife and two children. They were sick for all of the time on the island and were sick again coming home and for most of the following day. Definitely the low point of our holiday. Wouldn't have minded paying a fee for a late change to the sailing, but Aran ferries showed absolutely no flexibility in even considering my request.
