Misleading and disappointing - In July, we booked a trip to the Louisbourg Lighthouse trail through an intermediary as the cruise operator we were travelling with cancelled the excursion to that trail. A couple of days before, we emailed Lotta to confirm the trip and clarify logistics. The reply was that the Louisbourg trail was closed but we could do an alternative, being a trip to the Highlqnd Village Museum and Goat Island. Given we had no alternative, we agreed. Subsequently, we discovered that the trail has been closed for some two years so it should not have been sold to us. The trip we did was okay in itself and the Highland Village Museum was excellent (and well-worth a visit). Goat Island was deserted and we were the only people there; we enjoyed a walk around the trail but the visitor centre was closed (although the sign on the door claimed it was open). However, our “guide” was a very pleasant young man who was not a local and clearly did not know much about the area. He turned up in a fairly well-worn Chevrolet Impala taxi (with a few warning lights shining on the dash!) and although we did not expect a limo, we did expect something better than an elderly taxi. The Lotta website talks about expert local guides; unfortunately, our driver did not fit that bill. He’d never been in either of the two places we visited and we were left to our own devices whilst he had a snooze in the car. We didn’t need someone to follow us around but he didn’t offer anything other than a perfunctory few words about the (complicated) history of the region (we knew more from reading the summary in our daily cruise newsletter). We thought that tour guides had to undergo training and pass some tests; obviously not in Nova Scotia!
