• Inari - The hike begins at the roadside where the car is parked, leading into a pine forest that gradually transitions into a mountain birch forest and eventually opens up to a plateau. The plateau features gentle slopes and a soft walking surface with underlying rocks, adorned with crowberry, mountain bearberry, and heather as the primary vegetation. From the top of the fjell, the Ivalo River valley is visible to the south, with expansive pine forests stretching to the west and north.

During the walk, signs of reindeer herding are evident, and with some luck, grazing reindeer can be spotted in the valleys. Other wildlife includes various birds such as willow grouses, Siberian jays, whimbrels, and golden plovers. While taking a break atop the fjell, a rough-legged buzzard might be seen circling in search of its next meal.

The pace is leisurely, allowing for the appreciation of the surrounding silence and openness, offering a true experience of nature’s beauty.

Hammastunturi Wilderness Area, or Hammastunturin erämaa in Finnish (meaning “tooth fell”), is among the most isolated and least frequented wilderness regions in Western Europe. The protected area’s heart composed of Kehäpää, Hammastunturi, and Appistunturi Fells, stands tall as the highest peaks reaching 500 meters. The northern boundary of spruce growth permeates the wilderness area, with the spruce forests in the southern part giving way to pine forests in the north.
