Reykjanes Peninsula is an ideal destination to explore Iceland. With its valleys merging into lava fields, its stark heights, dark rocks, and yawning craters, the peninsula’s extraordinary landscapes reveal the country’s wonderfully unique character.
In this part of the island, nature dictates the way of life. This strip of land in southwest Iceland is characterized by active underground volcanic activity. Its cooled lava soil, which prevents vegetation from growing, exposes bare reliefs and dark rocks typical of volcanic regions, creating a moonscape shaped by lava flows.
What you will see:
Kleifarvatn: This lake lies on a highly active volcanic fissure zone, surrounded by black sand shores and volcanic mountains. Following a series of earthquakes in 2000, the lake began to drain into a large fissure created by one of the quakes, an enigmatic phenomenon.
Seltún: This area features numerous mudpots and fumaroles heated by an underground magma chamber. Sulphuric water and gases have created colorful deposits. We will walk along wooden pathways to explore this fascinating area, especially when a new maar is formed with a spectacular explosion.
Grænavatn: A stunning emerald-colored lake created by a combination of thermal algae and sunlight-absorbing crystals.
Stóra and Litla Eldborg: Two perfectly-formed scoria craters that are part of a lava ring. You will marvel at this incredible moonscape.
Krisuvikurberg: One of Iceland’s most famous bird cliffs and the highest in the southwest. It is home to nearly 60,000 pairs of birds, including gulls, guillemots, razorbills, and fulmars. From mid-March to the end of August, you can also see puffins.
Gunnuhver: A place that is both surprising and enchanting, featuring a crater with ocher and orange stones that contrast with the turquoise milky waters of a lake at the top.
Valahnukar: We continue our journey to a desolate volcanic lava area. The view from here is stunning, with cliffs and rocks rising straight out of the ocean and a mountain composed of tuff layers, pillow lava, and breccia.
Leifur Eiríksson Bridge: A unique spot where two of the Earth’s tectonic plates diverge. You will have the chance to walk over this footbridge, which spans the fissure. This 18-meter-long bridge symbolizes the phenomenon of continental drift and connects the tectonic plates.
Sog: This site emerged after a volcanic eruption beneath a glacier that once covered the area. You will be amazed by this colorful location and its breathtaking surroundings.
