Volcano Hekla - Hekla is an active stratovolcano located in southern Iceland, standing at 1,491 meters (4,892 feet) tall. It is one of Iceland’s most frequently erupting volcanoes, with over 20 eruptions recorded since 1210. During the Middle Ages, Icelandic Norse referred to Hekla as the “Gateway to Hell,” a notion that spread throughout Europe.
Hjalparfoss - Hjálparfoss is a remarkably tranquil spot where the Fossá and Þjórsá rivers converge. These rivers are celebrated for being some of Iceland’s premier and most accessible fishing locations, with Þjórsá also being the longest river in the country. The two rivers descend from a lava field at approximately a 45-degree angle from each other, falling from similar heights and merging into a peaceful pool. This lava field was formed during one of the numerous eruptions of the nearby Hekla volcano, one of Iceland’s most active and explosive volcanoes, which was so violent in the Middle Ages that it was dubbed ‘the Gateway to Hell’. Hjálparfoss is just one of many waterfalls in the vicinity. Nearby, you can also find Þjófafoss, which flows from the Þjórsá river, and Háifoss, one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland. The water from Hjálparfoss supplies the country’s second-largest hydroelectric dam.
Landmannalaugar - Landmannalaugar is a breathtaking area in Iceland’s highlands, famous for its colorful rhyolite mountains and geothermal hot springs. It offers a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, soaking in natural hot springs, and exploring lava fields and obsidian caves. The region is a haven for hikers, with well-known trails like the Laugavegur trail leading to Thorsmork. Landmannalaugar is a unique area, both geologically and visually. It is situated next to the dark Laugahraun lava field, a vast area of solidified magma from an eruption in 1477. The area itself consists of windswept rhyolite mountains, a type of rock that produces a wide array of stunning colors. Hues of red, pink, green, blue, and golden yellow create an otherworldly landscape. Historically, Landmannalaugar was best known for its natural geothermal baths, which is reflected in its name, meaning “the People’s Pools.”
