The district’s centerpiece is the Benedictine Tihany Abbey, established in 1055 AD by András (Andrew) I, who is interred in its crypt. The abbey’s founding charter is the earliest known document in the Hungarian language, preserved at the Pannonhalma Benedictine Archabbey. The church was reconstructed in the Baroque style in 1754. This still-operational abbey is a favored tourist spot due to its historical and artistic importance, offering the best views of Lake Balaton.
