- Klis Fortress - Perched on an inaccessible steep cliff between the Kozjak and Mosor mountain ranges, this fortress holds significant strategic importance in Croatian history, making it one of the country’s most crucial forts.
Despite numerous pleas from the Croats to Christian European rulers for a united resistance against the Ottoman invasion, their efforts were in vain.
During your visit to Klis Fortress, a filming location for Game of Thrones, an official tour guide will provide insights into the history of the Dalmatia region and Croatia as a whole. The fortress houses a museum dedicated to the Croatian army, the Uskoci, who defended Europe from the Ottoman-Turkish invasion.
The tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of free time to relax and take photos of Split. The view from the fortress is breathtaking, offering a panoramic view of Split and its surroundings.
Around 12:00 PM, we will conclude our visit to Klis and head to the village of Gata.
- Gata - After visiting Klis Fortress, we will drive to the village of Gata to explore the site where the “Poljička Republic” was established, a visit that lasts about 30 minutes.
We will arrive in Gata around 12:30 PM, where a local guide will meet us and take us to the church housing the Poljica museum. Here, the guide will share the history and customs of the people who lived in the area, as well as the unique political structure of the Poljica Republic.
The museum tour, lasting approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, will cover the history of the Poljica Republic, the exhibited artifacts, and the preparation of a unique dish called Soparnika. After the museum tour, we will explore the village of Gata, enjoying a beautiful view of the Cetina river canyon and 30 minutes of free time.
At 2:30 PM, we will proceed to Tugare for Soparnik and wine tasting.
- Eko-etno sela Tugare - Central Dalmatia Croatia - Theme Trails - “SOPARNIK” TRADITIONAL FOOD
“Soparnik is Croatian pizza”
We will arrive at a local family restaurant around 3:00 PM, where Soparnik is prepared.
Traditionally, Soparnik is served from the middle towards the edges, with the guest of honor receiving the first piece from the center. It is accompanied by a bucara of wine, placed in the middle of the steamer after cutting and serving four pieces.
There is a theory that Soparnik is a simpler version of the Bosnian vegetable pie, given Poljica’s historical proximity to the Ottoman Empire and its inclusion in the Ottoman state from 1540 to 1699.
Soparnik is recognized as an indigenous Croatian product in the European register and is listed as a protected intangible heritage by UNESCO.
The tour guide will share the history and preparation of Soparnik, along with its cultural significance. The host will also serve local red and white wine, cheese, and olives.
Around 4:00 PM, we will return to Split.
