- North Mountain Drive - As the journey continues along North Mountain Drive, take a moment to observe the surrounding flora. What plants catch your eye?
Hot Springs National Park hosts a vast array of unique plants, including some that thrive near very hot water! If you visit one of the springs, you might notice a spongy gray material near the spring opening.
- Gulpha Gorge Trail - The Gulpha Gorge Trail offers a moderate 1.5-mile roundtrip hike to Gulpha Gorge, where a creek cascades beautifully down a series of low falls. Although the hike to the gorge is downhill, you will gain several hundred feet of elevation on the return. Plan to spend at least an hour on this trail.
- Goat Rock Trail - Soon, the trailhead for the Goat Rock Trail will be reached. This moderate two-mile hike takes about one and a half hours to complete and leads to the stunning Goat Rock Viewpoint, offering breathtaking views of nearby Indian Mountain. In the spring, enjoy a spectacular display of wildflowers!
- Happy Hollow Fountain - Coming up on the right is Happy Hollow Fountain. In the 1920s, this was the site of Happy Hollow Springs, one of the most lively and festive spots in town.
Feel free to take a drink from Happy Hollow Fountain! Unlike Noble Fountain, this water is refreshingly cool.
- West Mountain Lower Overlook - Approaching the West Mountain Lower Overlook, where beautiful views of downtown Hot Springs can be enjoyed.
Stopping here to take in the views is highly recommended. It’s the second to last overlook of the journey. To visit the overlook, park in the turnout on the right.
- Bathhouse Row - Today, this is a gift shop. But historically, it was the Lamar Bathhouse. Unlike other bathhouses along this avenue, this one featured special, extra-long tubs – perfect for anyone over six feet!
- Buckstaff Bathhouse - This is one of the best-preserved bathhouses in the park. In fact, it’s one of only two bathhouses where bathing is still possible! To learn more, tap Learn More.
Before deciding on a soak, you might wonder: Do these waters really cure diseases? Is there something magical about them?
- Fordyce Bathhouse Visitor Center And Museum - The Fordyce Bathhouse is named after Ohio-born businessman Samuel Wesley Fordyce. Fordyce served in the Union during the Civil War and contracted malaria, which plagued his health for years. In 1873, he sought relief from the healing powers of these hot springs.
- The Maurice Bathhouse - This green-accented bathhouse is the Maurice, which opened in 1912. With a roof garden, therapeutic pool, and modern elevators, it was the most advanced facility of its time.
- Superior Bathhouse Brewery and Distillery - Today, it houses the only brewery located inside a national park and the only brewery worldwide to use thermal spring water in their beer! For more details on the brewery, click on Learn More.
- Grand Promenade - Before Hot Springs’ golden age, this was a simple service road. Transforming it into a grand Promenade was an effort to connect the luxurious bathhouses with the wooded slopes of the mountain.
- Display Springs - In the early 20th century, celebrities were a notable feature of the park. This little city in Arkansas was a prime spot for celebrity sightings, especially baseball stars!
- Former Army Navy Hospital - This was the first hospital in the country to treat both Army and Navy patients. The idea originated with Senator John Logan, who visited Hot Springs in 1882. He envisioned a medical facility where veterans from multiple military branches could receive effective, affordable treatment, and believed Hot Springs was the ideal location.
- Noble Fountain - At the end of the Grand Promenade at Reserve Street, look for the small courtyard with the fountain. Walk over and pause.
This is Noble Fountain, fed by a thermal spring. If you wish, you can take a drink from this fountain!
