“A Monkey in Winter,” a film by Henri Verneuil, was filmed here during the winter of 1961-1962. Villerville is depicted as Tigreville in the film. A local association, established in 2001, preserves the memory of the filming. Since June 2007, a large photo of the film’s stars, Jean Gabin and Jean-Paul Belmondo, has been displayed at the entrance to the main street. Further down the street is the Norman Cabaret, a restaurant featured in the film.
- Le Vieux Bassin - This watershed was created at the behest of Abraham Duquesne and by order of Colbert in 1681.
It replaced the old, narrower haven of beaching. The construction required the demolition of the western part of the ramparts and was completed in 1684.
- Saint Catherine’s Church - The Church of Sainte-Catherine in Honfleur is an extraordinary architectural gem, representing the town’s rich historical and maritime heritage. Built in the late 15th century, this entirely wooden church is the largest of its kind in France, making it a truly remarkable monument.
Its distinctive architecture is the result of the craftsmanship of the shipbuilders of the time, who used naval construction techniques to create this place of worship. The main nave, shaped like an inverted ship’s hull, is supported by massive oak beams, exuding both strength and elegance. The detached bell tower, reminiscent of an old ship’s lighthouse, further highlights the maritime connection that defines Honfleur.
Dedicated to Saint Catherine, the patron saint of carpenters, the church reflects the importance of this community in Honfleur’s history as a once-thriving maritime port.
- Chapelle Notre Dame de Grace - The chapel “Notre-Dame de Grâce” was constructed between 1600 and 1615 by the citizens and sailors of Honfleur on the site of an old chapel that disappeared in a cliff landslide. This original chapel was founded before 1023 by Richard II, then Duke of Normandy, to fulfill a vow made during a storm in which he nearly perished. Since then, the cult of “Notre-Dame de Grâce” has been maintained.
The building was classified as a historical monument in 1938.
- Panorama Mont-Joli - Visitors will enjoy a stunning panorama, especially on a sunny day. The view includes the port basins, the two pylons of the Normandy Bridge connecting Honfleur to Le Havre, and a significant portion of the old city with its narrow streets.
- Le Manoir d’Apreval - At Manoir d’Apreval, a family-run estate located between Deauville and Honfleur, visitors can meet the family and friends who have been passionately producing cider and calvados for five generations. Specializing in the cultivation of apples and pears, Manoir d’Apreval combines traditional and modern methods with a commitment to environmental respect. All products, including pure fruit juices, cider, pommeau, and calvados, are organic. Nestled amidst the lush orchards of the Pays d’Auge, this charming estate offers an authentic and flavorful experience, immersing guests in the heart of Norman tradition while revealing the secrets of their production.
- TOURIST INTERCOMMUNAL DEAUVILLE - The pilot will return guests to their hotel or the tourist office.
