Punta Gorda is inhabited by approximately 150 Garifuna families, descendants of African slaves who settled in Roatán from St. Vincent in 1797, after being exiled by the British following a suppressed rebellion.

On the southern coast, embark on a traditional cayuco for an intimate view of Oak Ridge, often referred to as the Venice of Roatán, as it is accessible only by boat. As you pass by Oak Ridge’s vibrantly painted wooden houses on stilts, discover how this tranquil seaside village, once a pirate haven, now hosts family-run fishing businesses, the island’s second-largest industry.
