-
Kachina Point - The vastness of the Painted Desert is clearly visible from this overlook, easily accessible via a short path from the parking lot behind the Painted Desert Inn.
-
Puerco Pueblo - A small vault toilet is located by the parking lot here.
-
The Tepees - These cone-shaped hills, with bands of various mudstone colors, are said to resemble tepees. There are two pull-offs along Petrified Forest Rd for parking and viewing—the North Pullout and the South Pullout, which also serves as the trailhead for the “Off the Beaten Path” Blue Forest Trail.
-
Blue Mesa - Blue Mesa is one of the park’s most stunning areas, offering more chances to explore the unique, eroded badlands. At the top of Blue Mesa, the road divides into a one-way loop. Stop at the initial pull-offs for a view of the badlands and the first petrified wood deposit visible when coming from the north.
-
Agate Bridge - This 100-foot-long petrified log spans a small chasm, forming a bridge. When the park first opened, visitors could stand on it! Today, the log is off-limits and supported by concrete, but it’s a quick, easy stop to see an impressively long piece of petrified wood.
-
Jasper Forest - An overlook provides a view over a desert plain with a dense petrified wood deposit below. Want a closer look? Another ‘off the beaten path’ trail starts from the right of the parking lot, leading down to the deposit along a well-trodden path to the wash. Then it’s just you and the petrified wood—a truly remarkable and unusual landscape.
-
Crystal Forest Trail - This 0.75-mile hike loops through one of the park’s major petrified wood deposits. The paved trail and mostly flat terrain make for an easy hike, accessible for those with wheelchairs or strollers.
-
Rainbow Forest Museum - If visiting only one visitor center in the national park, choose this one! Besides the usual orientation video, gift shop, restrooms, and information desk, you’ll find exhibits on the area’s paleontology, including fossils discovered in the park. Behind the building is the 0.4-mile Giant Logs trail, which passes some of the park’s largest pieces of petrified wood.
