These narrow tunnels were originally designed to allow just one person to crawl through, though some have been widened for visitor access. Remarkably, the upper soil layer, only 10–13 feet (3–4 m) thick, can withstand the weight of a 55-ton (50 mT) tank and the impact of bombs.
Visitors can watch an enlightening film about the wartime experience before delving into the tunnel’s trap doors and underground quarters. The site also includes large bomb craters from the war, the Garment-Factory Ammunition and Souvenir Shops, and the Museum of Self-Made Weapons. For an authentic wartime experience, visitors can try firing an M-15, AK-47, and a carbine rifle at the National Defense Sports Shooting Range.
