Initially built in 1948 to aid the Viet Minh in their quest for independence from the French, the tunnels’ excavation and construction continued for 25 years. This effort resulted in an underground city featuring living quarters, kitchens, storage areas, weapons factories, field hospitals, and command centers. These tunnels housed thousands of individuals who lived almost entirely underground for years, maintaining relatively normal lives, including marrying and raising children.

Cu Chi Tunnels - During the American War, the entire Cu Chi region was declared a free-fire zone and endured intense attacks and bombings. In 1988, two sections of the tunnels were opened to the public. Visitors now have the opportunity to explore this fascinating and educational site. Designed with “moving parts,” these structures were intended for long-term habitation. For those interested, there is an option to fire rounds from a war-era M16 or AK47 at the nearby shooting range. (This activity is optional; shooting range fees are not included).
