• Ishida Building No. 2 - Experience the art of playing the traditional Japanese instrument, the koto, through our engaging lessons. In just a 90-minute session, participants can perform a complete piece. All lessons are conducted in English.

Participants will be introduced to the koto, Japan’s national musical instrument. They will gain a brief understanding of its rich history and have the opportunity to touch and play the instrument. Instruction will cover the correct way to play the koto, including setting up the instrument, maintaining proper posture and technique, and reading koto notation. By the end of the lesson, participants will have learned to play their first koto piece: “Sakura.”

The Koto is a traditional Japanese instrument celebrated for its distinctive and expressive sound. Enjoy a live Koto performance in a cozy, small-group environment. Discover the history of the Koto and the profound meanings associated with this exquisite instrument. This session is interactive, allowing you to ask the Koto performer any questions you may have, whether about the instrument or other topics. The performer is fluent in English, ensuring smooth and comfortable communication.

Additionally, there is an optional service where you can try playing the Koto yourself. The Koto performer will assist you in learning how to play. By the end of the session, you’ll be able to perform the popular Koto piece “Sakura Sakura” and participate in a group ensemble with the performer.
