The shrine is built over the sea, as ancient people believed Miyajima Island was a goddess. Itsukushima Shrine’s signature feature is the Otorii gate, which stands alone. Its height matches that of the Great Buddha in Nara Prefecture, and the pillar’s diameter is 10 meters. Visitors can walk to it during low tide.
