• Sankozo - The Sankozo (Treasure House) Museum, located slightly uphill to the left, is a must-see with over 3,000 exhibits. Visitors are greeted by three large, impressive wooden gilded statues of the Buddha upon entry, and a highlight is the stunning 1.74m-tall image of a “Thousand Arms” Kannon, the goddess of mercy.
• Hakusan Shrine - Nearby is a 19th-century thatched Outdoor Noh Stage (Nohgakudo) adjacent to the Hakusan Shrine.
• Motsu-ji Temple - Another major attraction in Hiraizumi is Motsuji Temple (Tel: 0191 46 2331), renowned for its beautiful strolling gardens.

Similar to Chusonji, Motsuji is believed to have been established by the priest Ennin in the 9th century. Although most buildings no longer stand, a few foundation stones remain, and the exquisite, serene Jodo teien Heian garden with its large pond is beautifully preserved. A small museum to the left of the main entrance showcases images of Motsuji’s fascinating festivals (see below).

• Takkoku no Iwaya - Takkoku no Iwaya Bishamondo Temple is a magnificent ancient temple built into a cliff rock wall approximately 1,200 years ago, and it is the next stop on an exciting day trip. Constructed during the Heian period to honor the ruling government’s victory over the local indigenous Emishi population of the north, the temple’s original appearance has been lost to time. However, it has been rebuilt as an impressive structure in its own right, offering a wonderful place to spend the afternoon and immerse oneself in a piece of Japanese history.
