History tour of Daufuski Island - What a wonderful experience with Captain Dean. Our boat ride out to the island was picturesque. We were lucky to come upon a large pod of dolphins on the way. We boarded our golf cart and set out to tour the historical part of the island. Captain Dean was very knowledgeable and explained the island's history from the revolutionary war, civil war, up to today. The famous author, Pat Conroy, who wrote " The Water us Wide" taught out here for a year. We were able to see the school where he taught the Gullah youngsters. I would highly recommend this tour to everyone.

On the water with history thrown in!! - Captain Pete is a history buff as well as a great captain. It was a beautiful afternoon. We left on the 1 o’clock boat ride to Daufuskie. Got to see homes and oyster beds and boats. On the Island you ride around in a golf cart to historical sites and captain Pete tells you a lot of history about the Gullahs and others that influenced the development of Daufuski Island. Very informative and you have a chance to buy some things that locals that live on the island make. Very special was the indigo died garments that LeAnne had for sale in her shop at the old school building.

Capt. Pete was great. I... - Capt. Pete was great. I truly appreciated his truthful telling of the enslaved history of the island. As a descendant of enslaved ancestors I am grateful when the history is told accurately.

A little light history and adventure - There are many components to this tour that keep things interesting over the course of the four hours. Traveling by small boat is entertaining as you watch the multimillion dollar homes surround you, speeding up to feel the spray of the water, and looking for dolphins along the way (my daughter usually gets seasick, but she was fine on this trip). Once on the island, travel by golf cart was comfortable with frequent stops to stretch our legs. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable as he has been giving this tour for over a decade. Much of the history has disappeared and there are apparently less than 50 Gullah people left on the island out of 500 total residents (you might see one Gullah person, but they are not available to chat with tourists about their experience on the island). We stopped at a few craft shops all being operated by white residents including one being run by the family of the church pastor. If a percentage of the purchase were going to support the Gullah community I would have been more likely to buy something. If you've read the Pat Conroy book about the island you will likely enjoy this trip more.
