- Fort George - Completed in 1726 in Inverness, the original Fort George was besieged by 3,000 Jacobites during the 1745 uprising. Isolated and unable to receive aid from Crown forces, the fort was surrendered in February 1746 after mines reached its outer walls. The victorious Jacobites demolished Old Fort George to prevent its reuse by the British Army. In 1747, after the Crown’s victory at the Battle of Culloden, Colonel William Skinner, the King’s Military Engineer for northern Britain, was tasked with rebuilding Fort George. The new fort was constructed 10 miles (16 km) from Inverness at the mouth of the Moray Firth. The site of Old Fort George remained abandoned for nearly 70 years until the mid-19th century when Inverness Castle, a red sandstone castellated building, was erected on the former site. Fort George is still in operation by the British Army today.
- Brodie Castle - Originally built in 1567 by Clan Brodie, the Z-plan castle was destroyed by fire in 1645 by Lewis Gordon of Clan Gordon, the 3rd Marquis of Huntly. In 1824, architect William Burn was hired to transform it into a mansion house in the Scots Baronial style, but these additions were never completed and were later remodeled by James Wylson. The Brodie family resided in the castle until the early 21st century. It is believed that the family has been associated with the land since around 1160, when King Malcolm IV granted it to them. Architecturally, the castle features a well-preserved 16th-century central keep with two 5-storey towers on opposite corners. The interior is also well-preserved, showcasing fine antique furniture, oriental artifacts, and painted ceilings, primarily from the 17th–19th centuries.
- Benromach - Established in 1898 by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman, Benromach distillery is a Speyside distillery now owned and operated by Gordon and MacPhail of Elgin. Located near Forres in Morayshire, it is supplied with spring water from the Chapelton Springs in the Romach Hills near Forres. Visitors can enjoy tastings of both Gin and Whisky in their comfortable tasting lounge.
- Culloden Viaduct - Designed by Chief Engineer Murdoch Paterson and constructed by the Highland Railway in 1889, the impressive Culloden Viaduct features 29 arches spanning the valley and River Nairn. This grand sandstone structure is similar to the Glenfinnan Viaduct (featured in Harry Potter) but on a much larger scale.
- Clava Cairns - Known as the Prehistoric Burial Cairns of Bulnuaran of Clava, Clava Cairns is a group of three Bronze Age cairns near Inverness. This significant and exceptionally well-preserved prehistoric site is a remarkable example of Highland Scotland’s ancient history, dating back approximately 4,000 years. Clava Cairns inspired the Craigh na Dun standing stones in the book and TV series Outlander. The famous “Cleft Stone,” which transports the main character Claire back in time, is located here.
- Culloden Battlefield - On April 16, 1746, the final Jacobite Rising reached a brutal climax. Jacobite supporters, aiming to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British thrones, gathered to battle the Duke of Cumberland’s government troops. It was the last pitched battle on British soil, and in less than an hour, around 1,600 men were killed, 1,500 of them Jacobites. The Visitor Museum houses artifacts from both sides of the bloody battle that day.
