• The Whale House Museum - An Introduction to Southern Right Whales and Hermanus

A visit to the museum offers guests an opportunity to learn about the Southern Right whale, including details about their size, length, and weight. The guide explains the unique connection between whales and Hermanus, discussing the history of whaling and its significant impact on the whale population, which nearly led to their extinction.

The tour continues along the stunning cliff path in front of the town, elevated approximately 15 meters above the ocean. This height provides an excellent vantage point for viewing the bay. Many are unaware that the ocean depth directly below the cliffs is about 10 meters, allowing whales to come remarkably close to the rocks. Whales are frequently spotted between 50 and 300 meters from the shoreline.
