• Senate Square - Helsinki was founded in 1550 approximately 6 km from here. Senate Square is the birthplace of the second Helsinki that we can admire today. The mystery of the first one will be revealed during the tour. Witness the marvel of Engel’s work, a German architect who rebuilt the capital from scratch after the devastating fire of 1808. Our journey through centuries begins here, in the oldest preserved part of Helsinki.
• The National Library of Finland - Engel’s library, befitting a new capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland, though the collection dates back to 1640. Old, classical, and incredibly beautiful, this is the oldest library in Helsinki and will serve as our reference point for comparing with the 21st-century library, Oodi.
• Helsinki Cathedral - The jewel of Helsinki, this Lutheran church will puzzle you with its architectural decisions. Try to guess where the bells are or what lies beneath the church. It is a key to the 19th-century heart of Finland.
• Uspenskin Cathedral (Uspenskin Katedraali) - This 1868 Russian Orthodox church with a Finnish heart was built with donation money and intended to serve the Russian military. Feel the difference in styles compared to Helsinki Cathedral. Closed on Mondays.
• Presidential Palace - The Presidential Palace, where the annual ball takes place and where our president works. Previously, it served as a residence for Russian tsars and their families and was at the very edge of Helsinki. The 19th-century city ended here.
• Kauppatori - The Swedes founded cities by the shore, and the Gulf of Finland is the reason why Helsinki is located here. Look around, spot a sauna, try national food, berries, and shop for souvenirs. See the ferry to Suomenlinna, a Swedish fortress and UNESCO site worth visiting.
• Old Market Hall - Established in 1889 with Swedish influence in the heart of Finland. Old and charming! Have a taste of Finland: a salmon sandwich on rye bread is delicious.
• Havis Amanda - A fountain from 1908 by Ville Vallgren. Beloved by citizens and a political symbol during Russian times. Learn about the Finnish tradition of May 1st and the Finnish character.
• The Esplanadi Park - Helsinki’s central park attracts both locals and tourists with its shade, ice cream shops, monuments, and beauty. Spot the Kappeli café and restaurant from 1865. Esplanadi was the border of 19th-century Helsinki. With fashion shops and luxurious restaurants, it has something to offer everyone.
• Johan Ludvig Runebergin muistomerkki - Meet Johan Ludwig Runeberg, the first Finnish national poet who wrote only in Swedish. The central place in Esplanadi is dedicated to him, showing the appreciation he still deserves. On his birthday, Finnish flags are displayed in his honor, and shops are filled with pastries made from his wife’s recipe. The monument was created by his son, Walter Runeberg.
• Pohjolan toimitalo - A 1901 landmark of Finnish Romantic architecture designed by three friends, now a source of pride. Finnish national folklore is depicted on this building. Learn about Kalevala, and spot the bears and the green tower roof.
• Aleksis Kiven patsas - A somber monument to Finnish poet Aleksis Kivi, surrounded by the magnificent Ateneum and National Theater buildings. Look around and trace the changes in architectural styles from the 19th to the 20th century. Which style do you prefer?
• Rautatieasema - Enter the Central Railway Station and feel the space. It is the heart of Helsinki, designed by Eliel Saarinen, who was forced to simplify the original Finnish romantic style to a more modest one. How many railway stations have you seen with a tower and bells?
• Central Library Oodi - “Library” and much more in one building with a magnificent view of the Parliament, Finnish National Museum, Hakasalmi Villa, and Finlandia Concert Hall. Take a break and enjoy a moment of peace. From the balcony, you can see the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries interwoven in a beautiful panorama of Helsinki while drinking Finnish coffee and eating a cinnamon bun.
