• Seljalandsfoss - From Reykjavík, we embark on a 2-hour drive to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. This unique waterfall allows visitors to walk behind it as it cascades down from the foothills of Eyjafjallajökull. It’s a picturesque spot where you might catch the late afternoon sun shining through the water. A nearby food truck offers fresh donuts and hot coffee throughout the day. We spend about 30 minutes here.
• Skogafoss - A 30-minute drive from Seljalandsfoss takes us to Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most stunning waterfalls, located at the base of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. The Skógaá river plunges nearly 200 feet into a beautiful gorge. You can enjoy the waterfall from the gorge level, which is at the same level as the parking lot, or climb 428 steps for a different perspective.
• Reynisfjara Beach - Next, we head to Reynisfjara Beach, a 40-minute drive from Skógafoss. This black sand beach stretches from Reynisfjall mountain to Dyrhólaey, marking the southernmost point of Iceland. The next landmass directly south is Antarctica, about ten thousand miles away. The coastline here is constantly changing due to its location between the Eyjafjallajökull and Katla volcanoes. The 1918 Katla eruption extended the coastline by nearly 200 meters with sand, gravel, and ash. The beach features fascinating rock formations and basalt columns rising from the surf. In summer, puffins nest here.
• Eldhraun Lava Field - The Eldhraun Lava Field is the largest lava flow on earth from historic times, covering around 600 km2, roughly the size of Chicago. The massive 1784 Laki eruption produced an ash cloud that circled the globe, blocking sunlight and causing harsh winters and cold summers in the northern hemisphere, leading to the famine that sparked the French Revolution.
• Vatnajokull National Park - Vatnajökull National Park is Iceland’s largest national park, home to Vatnajökull, the country’s largest glacier, covering around 8000 km2 with an average thickness of nearly 400 meters. The glacier has 30 outlet glaciers and various glacier tongues. Öræfajökull Volcano, part of the glacier, includes Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, at 2110.9 meters. Private tours can be arranged to explore the glacier and its natural ice caves.
• Jokulsarlon - From Reynisfjara Beach, we travel about 3 hours to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, passing several natural spots along the way. Jökulsárlón is a stunning glacial lagoon in southeast Iceland, featuring floating icebergs drifting from the Vatnajökull Glacier to the Atlantic Ocean. The contrast of clear ice against black volcanic sands creates a breathtaking scene, showcasing Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes.
• Diamond Beach Jokulsarlon - Near Jökulsárlón, Diamond Beach offers a magical sight where icebergs from the glacial lagoon wash ashore, sparkling like diamonds on the black volcanic sands. This striking contrast creates a surreal and captivating view, highlighting the beauty of Iceland’s south coast.

The drive back to Reykjavík from Diamond Beach takes approximately 4-5 hours.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon at Vatnajökull National Park, is an amazing place and an absolutely mind blowing experience. Go on an amphibian boat tour (optional extra), navigating amidst white and blue icebergs, watching the heads of seals chasing fish into the water.
