Additional Information

A dozen age-old artificial grottos have been found on the property of Ægissíða near Hella along the southern seaboard of Iceland. Currently, four of these caves are accessible to the public through our tour guides. This location is considered the most ancient archaeological site in Iceland that’s still standing. Some conjecture that these caves might be older than the Nordic Viking settlement.

The marvels within the Hella Caves include age-old crosses, intricate wall engravings, and carved seating.

A cloud of uncertainty looms over these caves and over the years, numerous individuals have pondered over two main questions:

Were the Celts responsible for the construction of these caves?
Could these caves have possibly served as sacred sites for ancient rituals?

These caves are a significant historical monument, and during your visit, you’ll uncover hidden gems and untold tales from Iceland’s past.

Come, explore the enigmatic insides of these caves with a local guide and immerse in the spellbinding Underworld of the south.

The positioning of these caves is convenient, adjacent to Route 1 (also known as the Ring Road), which is roughly an hour’s journey from Reykjavik.

Icelandic settlers + a 3 cave experience! - Our stop in the caves of Hella was a great experience. It was the perfect stop on a rainy day to go inside those caves to explore. The guide was very informative about the area and shared her local knowledge along with very interesting facts about the history of the first settlers in Iceland. Its not the typical “cave experience” as some might think, as they are man made, but the caves are beautiful and offer you great insight into Icelandic History!

Quite worth seeing - I was positively surprised as I had already read some negative things about this tour. But she was very informative, caves were impressive. Sure, not everything is really documented, not much was written at the time, but the explanations are quite logical (if you follow the history of Iceland). Of course it was also good that the group consisted of only 5 people 😊. Price, like everything here, just typical Icelandic😉, but m. E. still acceptable.

Everyone should check this out! - This was an absolutely fascinating tour! These man-made caves are so interesting, and our guide provided so much information about the history of Iceland, as well as some theories about who built/used the caves. He was also really funny...my teens even enjoyed the tour and admitted they learned something! I would recommend this to everyone visiting the area!

Expected more - For what we paid for we expected much more. 3 caves.. pretty much nothing in them. There were inscriptions on the walls which seemed intererting but looks like many were recent in the last couple years? Ended up just saying they used it for sheep and a makeshift church at some point.
