Transfer to Great Zimbabwe Ruins/Monuments
Great Zimbabwe National Monument - Great Zimbabwe is a historic city located in the southeastern hills of Zimbabwe, near Masvingo. It served as the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe during the Late Iron Age and is believed to have been a royal palace for the local monarch. Construction began in the 11th century and continued until the 15th century. The stone city covers 722 hectares (1,780 acres) and could have accommodated up to 18,000 people at its peak.
Great Zimbabwe is a national monument and the modern independent state is named after it. The term “great” distinguishes it from the numerous smaller ruins, known as “zimbabwes,” scattered across the Zimbabwe Highveld. There are over 200 such sites in southern Africa, with Great Zimbabwe being the largest. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Transfer to Matopos National Park
Matobo National Park - The Matopos - Matobo National Park boasts a rich diversity of wildlife, including 175 bird species, 88 mammal species, 39 snake species, and 16 fish species. The park is home to white rhinos, sable antelopes, impalas, and leopards, which thrive due to the abundance of hyrax, their primary food source. The game park in the west has been restocked with white and black rhinos, the former from South Africa and the latter from the Zambezi Valley. It is designated as an Intensive Protection Zone for these species. Matobo National Park also has the highest concentration of black eagles.
The Matobo Hills are entirely composed of granite, forming the Matopos Batholith. The granite weathers into remarkable shapes, such as the balancing rocks known as Mother and Child Kopje.
A visit to this area is a must, as it is steeped in history; many negotiations and agreements regarding the colonization of Zimbabwe took place here, and Cecil John Rhodes is buried here.
