Owakudani, created around 4,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption, is one of Hakone’s renowned tourist attractions. Once called “Hell Valley” due to its toxic fumaroles and boiling pools, it was renamed Owakudani after Emperor Meiji’s visit in 1876.
Here, you can sample the local delicacy: Kuro-tamago (Black Eggs), boiled in sulfuric hot springs. Legend has it that consuming one egg adds seven years to your life. The eggs turn black due to a chemical reaction between the hot spring’s sulfur and iron.
