From Open Roads to Open Seas: My Journey on the Doria Cruise
Drawn by the allure of the open sea, I embarked on the Doria Cruise to explore Vietnam’s Halong and Lan Ha Bays. Join me as I reflect on this unforgettable journey, blending luxury with adventure.
Setting Sail on a New Adventure
As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips across the American Midwest, I never imagined I’d find myself on a luxury cruise in Vietnam. Yet, there I was, boarding the Doria Cruise to explore the breathtaking Halong and Lan Ha Bays. The allure of the open road has always been my calling, but this time, the open sea beckoned. The journey began with a tender boat ride from Tuan Chau Marina, a gentle reminder of the many ferry rides I’ve taken across the Mississippi River. The anticipation was palpable as we approached the majestic Doria, a vessel that promised luxury and adventure.
The moment I stepped aboard, I was struck by the ship’s elegance. The rooms were spacious, a pleasant surprise for a boat, and the bath was nothing short of stunning. I spent countless hours soaking in the tub, gazing out at the ever-changing scenery, much like I would from the window of our RV parked at a scenic overlook. The ship felt new, and everything was impeccably clean, a testament to the crew’s dedication. The pool and common areas were inviting, reminiscent of the community pools in small towns where I’ve spent many a summer afternoon.
A Journey Through Time and Nature
The cruise offered a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. Each day was meticulously organized, with excursions that took us deeper into the heart of Vietnam’s natural beauty. On the second day, we embarked on a smaller boat to visit Viet Hai village and Ba Trai Dao Beach. The experience was akin to discovering a hidden gem off a beaten path, a feeling I cherish from my road-tripping days. The village, nestled between jungle and limestone towers, was a step back in time, much like the historic towns I’ve explored across America.
The highlight of the day was a leisurely bike ride through the village, reminiscent of the bike trails that wind through the Midwest’s rolling hills. The path led us through lush greenery and past serene lagoons, offering glimpses of a simpler way of life. Lunch was served in the village, a delightful spread that rivaled the best diners I’ve encountered on my travels. The sea bass and prawn dishes were particularly memorable, their flavors as vibrant as the landscapes surrounding us.
Reflections on a Memorable Voyage
As the cruise drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the journey. The staff, especially Luna, made the experience truly special. Her warmth and attentiveness reminded me of the friendly faces I’ve met in small-town diners and roadside motels. The food, served in a taster menu format, was a culinary journey in itself, with each dish telling a story of its own.
While the drinks were on the pricier side, the 3-4-2 cocktail offer added a touch of nostalgia, reminiscent of happy hours at local bars along Route 66. The decision to close the bar early ensured a peaceful night’s sleep, much like the quiet nights spent under the stars in our RV.
In the end, the Doria Cruise was a journey of discovery, both of a new land and of myself. It was a reminder that adventure knows no bounds, whether on the open road or the open sea. As I disembarked, I felt a sense of gratitude for the memories made and the stories yet to be told. The cruise may have ended, but the journey continues, with new roads and seas to explore.
