Highlights

DAY 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro - The drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.

Additional Information

Machame Route, also known as the “whiskey route,” is favored for its stunning views and diverse landscapes. However, it is more challenging to climb compared to the Marangu route. Despite being steeper and longer, the Machame route boasts a higher success rate than the Marangu route.

While not technically difficult, the Machame Route is more tiring due to its numerous ascents and descents across a series of valleys and ridges. This makes it ideal for those with some hiking or trekking experience and a love for adventure. For first-time climbers, the route can be quite exhausting.

The Machame Route begins in the south and heads east, passing beneath the southern ice fields before reaching the summit. Typically, it takes a minimum of six days to reach the summit via this route, though seven days is recommended.

Perfectly arranged safari and Kilimanjaro tours, best experience ever! - Went on safari with Kisaza (5 days) and climed the Kilimanjaro with Kisaza (8 days). Both tours were arranged perfectly. Seen the big 5, stayed at nice accomodations, reached Uhuru Peak and had the best experience of our life! The contact beforehand with Steven was very pleasant: very quick and clear communication via whatsapp. Send him a message and he will reply within one hour, but probably even faster! The food that our cook made for us at the Kilimanjaro was delicious and the whole crew of 11 people (private tour) was great! They treated us like king and queen (or as babies, that's how they called it). If we would go again, no single doubt that we will do it via Kisaza again. Very much recommended!

Kisaza and his teams got us to the top of Kilimanjaro AND Meru. Professional, LOCAL, fantastic service! - There are not many tour companies that can arrange back-to-back climbs of Mount Meru (inside Arusha National Park) and Kilimanjaro, but Kisaza Tours did this for us perfectly. About a month before our departure, we started arranging everything via email with Steven, the owner/manager of Kisaza. He was always quick to answer any question or concern we had from the smallest details to the biggest. Both climbs went perfectly with Kisaza arranging everything including transportation from the airport, hotels, and parks; and 2 fantastic teams taking us up 2 mountains. On Kilimanjaro, other tourists were jealous of the service we had: the most experienced, safe, upbeat guides (Mussa and Hillary) who checked our vitals each day and always kept us informed as to what we would be doing; our cook (Saidi) and waiter (Preescus) prepared meals as if we were in a 5 star restaurant; and the porters with their difficult job of carrying heavy loads up a tall mountain were always smiling. On Meru, it was just us (with the exception of a Dutch couple we saw coming down as we went up). Our team there was also fantastic. Meru is an off-the-beaten-path mountain that if you have time, should climb because you get a trekking safari within it! We climbed Kili 10 years ago with a different company (local also, we only book local) and loved that company too, but Kisaza was even better, which we did not think was possible. For all you Americans who worry about sending money across the world, do not worry. You are in good hands with Kisaza. Steven's teams who will do everything possible to make your trip perfect.

Amazing Kilimanjaro climb - I booked a private Kilimanjaro climb for me and my girlfriend with Kisaza Tours, it was a great decision. Communication was super convenient, we talked via WhatsApp to close dates and everything. The evening before the climb, we were picked up from the airport and taken to a hotel in Moshi. In the morning the guides came to ensure we had all the necessary equipment. The missing equipment was rented in Moshi before going to the gate, and everything was super convenient. At the Machame gate, we took our day packs on us and left the big bags for the porters. The hike itself was challenging, but the crew made sure everything else wasn't. We got a big tent comprised of 2 parts, one for eating and one for sleeping. We got hot water for drinking tea and washing our hands every evening and morning (it's super cold on the mountain, so it was very appreciated). Food was diverse, nutritious, and tasty. Everything was just great. Every evening and morning the guides checked our health to make sure we didn't get altitude sickness. Generally, the walking on the mountain was quite slow (pole pole), which was great as it was our first time at such a high altitude. I recommend the Kilimanjaro climb in general for everyone with good health, some prior training is advised. If you choose to do the climb I recommend Kisaza Tours, everything was really great, and the price was very good for what you get.
