Marangu Gate (1,800m/5,905ft) to Mandara Hut
Marangu - Begin your Kilimanjaro adventure by leaving Arusha/Moshi around 0800hrs to arrive at Marangu Gate for Mountain Climb Registration. Follow a narrow path through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest, stopping at Kisambioni for a picnic lunch halfway. After lunch, continue through the rainforest until you reach Mandara Hut. Spend your free time relaxing or take a short walk to Mahundi Crater, which offers stunning views to the east over Taveta and to the northwest towards Mawenzi Peak on clear days, making the short hike very rewarding.
Mandara Hut (2,743m/9,000ft) to Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - After breakfast, depart from Mandara Hut and the Kilimanjaro forests, heading towards Horombo Hut. Most of today’s trek will be through Kilimanjaro’s moorland, a rocky area with sparse vegetation. Stop for a picnic lunch at Kambi ya Taabu before continuing to Horombo Hut. If the weather is clear, enjoy breathtaking views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Horombo Hut around 1500hrs and relax for the rest of the afternoon.
Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft) to Mawenzi Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - Spend an extra day and night at Horombo to help your body acclimate. A recommended activity for acclimatization is a hike towards Mawenzi, passing by Zebra Rocks (about 3 hours uphill and 1.5 hours downhill).
Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft) to Kibo Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - After breakfast, continue your climb into the Alpine desert, passing the last water point at 13,550 ft/4,130m. Fill your water bottles for the journey until you return to Horombo Hut in two nights, unless you choose to buy mineral water at Kibo Hut. The summit is an additional 3,921 ft/1,195m higher, and your final ascent will take place the following night. Aim to go to bed around 18:30hrs to prioritize rest and sleep.
Kibo Hut (4,750m/15,580ft) to Summit (5,895m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - At around 23:30 hours, you’ll wake up. After having some tea and biscuits, you’ll set off into the night for the most challenging part of the climb. The initial trail involves navigating rocky terrain up to Hans Meyer point (17,225ft/5,250m), a good place to rest. The path then leads to Gillman’s Point (18,639ft/5,681m) on the crater rim. This section is particularly steep and features loose stones, requiring significant physical and mental effort.
Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft) to Marangu Gate
Kilimanjaro National Park - After breakfast, finish your trek with a descent to Marangu Gate, passing through Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest. Be cautious as the trails can be slippery. Sign out and receive your summit certificates at Marangu Gate: silver for reaching Gillman’s Point (18,652ft/5,685m) and gold for reaching Uhuru Peak (19,341ft/5,895m). Our vehicles will be waiting to take you back to Arusha, including accommodation and meals.
