Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya stands as a stunning example of ancient Sri Lankan art, architecture, and landscaping. Constructed over 1,600 years ago, the once ominous-looking 600-foot-high black rock appeared as a massive, dazzling white cloud above the forests. Its sides were adorned with frescoes of semi-naked nymphs. A large lion-shaped gatehouse guarded the entrance to the Sky Palace atop the rock. Sigiriya briefly rose to prominence before being abandoned and hidden in the forests for nearly 1,500 years. The climb to the top is challenging but rewarding.
