Sigiriya to Kandy
Sigiriya - Lion Rock in Sigiriya is a must-see landmark on any journey through Sri Lanka. This natural wonder is a massive (200m) square-shaped rock that appears as if it was placed there. Lion Rock is one of the eight UNESCO World Heritage sites and is a must-visit in Sri Lanka.
Pidurangala Rock - While Sigiriya Rock is steeped in history and features dramatic elements like the lion’s paw and the mirror wall, Pidurangala Rock offers a more natural ambiance, despite also housing a temple.
Pidurangala Rock is located next to Sigiriya Rock and provides the best vantage point for viewing Sigiriya Rock, as it is only slightly lower. Pidurangala is a favored spot for sunrise, offering 360-degree views of the valleys and Sigiriya Rock.
There’s no need to choose between the two. Many travelers enjoy the sunrise at Pidurangala and then head to Sigiriya Rock for the sunset.
Golden Temple of Dambulla - The stunning Royal Rock Temple complex is situated about 160m above the road in southern Dambulla. Five distinct caves house approximately 150 breathtaking Buddha statues and paintings, representing some of Sri Lanka’s most significant and evocative religious art. Buddha images were first created here over 2000 years ago, with subsequent kings adding to and enhancing the cave art over the centuries.
From the caves, there are magnificent views of the surrounding countryside; Sigiriya is clearly visible about 20km away.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - The golden-roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth contains Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha. During puja (offerings or prayers), the heavily guarded room housing the tooth is open to devotees and tourists. However, the tooth itself is not visible. It is kept in a gold casket shaped like a dagoba (stupa), which contains a series of six dagoba caskets of decreasing size.
In addition to the revered main temple, the complex includes a series of smaller temples, shrines, and museums.
Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
Damro Labookellie Tea Centre and Tea Garden - On the way to the scenic city of Nuwara Eliya, at an elevation of 5,000 feet, lies the renowned Labookellie Estate Tea Factory, famous for producing some of Ceylon’s finest teas. The estate, established nearly 150 years ago, is perhaps the second oldest tea plantation on the island.
Visitors who take the time to observe the tea manufacturing process can then take a short stroll to the “DAMRO LABOOKELLIE TEA LOUNGE,” one of the most sought-after locations in the hill country. It offers breathtaking views of tea gardens in various shades of green that blanket the slopes of surrounding hills and valleys. Observant visitors may also spot the gentle movement of tea pluckers, skillfully harvesting the tender two leaves and a bud.
Ramboda Waterfall - Ramboda Falls stands at 109 m (358 ft) high and is the 11th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and the 729th highest in the world. It is located in the Pussellawa area, on the A5 highway at Ramboda Pass. The falls are formed by Panna Oya, a tributary of Kothmale Oya, and are situated at an altitude of 945 m (3,100 ft) above sea level.
Nuwara Eliya to Colombo
Gregory Lake - Gregory Lake was created in 1873 by the British-era Governor at the time, Sir William Gregory, supposedly for the purpose of providing electricity. However, the lake was primarily used for leisure and recreation after its construction. At the height of its popularity, Gregory Lake was the most prominent attraction in the area and served as a relaxing spot for many visitors.
