- Moon Hill - Moon Hill is an iconic landmark of Yangshuo, appearing as a simple mountain with a lunar-shaped cavity from afar. The ascent is enjoyable and culminates in a panoramic view from the peak that solidifies its status as a top attraction in Yangshuo. The hill’s dense foliage and bamboo provide a verdant ambiance and respite from the summer heat. The ascent involves over 800 steps to reach the moon-like cave, where climbers often exhibit their prowess on the adjacent cliffs. A short climb from there leads to a vantage point offering expansive views of the surrounding terrain and the town of Yangshuo.
- Li River - Situated in the northeast of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Li River is a gem of natural beauty in China. Spanning 437 kilometers, it boasts the largest and most picturesque karst landscape in the world, epitomizing the quintessence of Guilin’s natural beauty. The 83-kilometer boat journey from Guilin to Yangshuo is particularly delightful, showcasing scenery reminiscent of classical Chinese ink paintings. The river’s reflections of the mountains infuse the solid rock formations with a sense of motion, spirituality, and vitality, captivating poets and scholars for generations.
- Impression Sanjie Liu - ‘Impression of Liu Sanjie’ is an open-air evening spectacle located next to the Li River in Yangshuo County, 60km from Guilin. Unlike traditional indoor performances, this show utilizes a 2 km stretch of the actual Li River as its stage, with the natural environment of mist, moonlight, and 12 karst peaks with their reflections in the river serving as a breathtaking backdrop. The show employs a sophisticated lighting system, special effects, and powerful sound to complement the natural scenery, offering a stunning visual experience.
The performance lasts about 70 minutes and is divided into seven segments: the Prelude, Red Impression, Green Impression, Golden Impression, Blue Impression, Silvery Impression, and the Epilogue. Each segment presents a unique tableau against the ever-changing backdrop of nature and illumination. The cast of 600, mostly local fishermen, brings authenticity to the show. Directed by Zhang Yimou, who also directed the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the show is a grand portrayal of Liu Sanjie’s traditional folk songs and the culture of ethnic groups, seamlessly integrated with the surrounding landscape.
