Situated in the western part of the country, within the coastal region, it lies southeast of the Chongón-Colonche mountain range in the province of Guayas, covering approximately 6,078 hectares. According to the Ebird platform, it is home to over 350 bird species. This protective forest hosts the subspecies of the great green macaw, the Guayaquil parrot (Ara ambiguus guayaquilensis), which is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN.
