- Casa Santo Domingo Museums - This is the largest monastery in Antigua Guatemala.
Situated on the grounds of the Santo Domingo Monastery, Casa Santo Domingo was originally a key convent in the Americas. The residents followed the order of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, and the monastery served as their refuge. Its history dates back to 1538 when the first Dominicans arrived in Guatemala, and it was once a magnificent structure with two towers and ten bells, filled with treasures and relics.
Sadly, the Santa Marta earthquake in 1773 partially destroyed the monastery, but what remains is a monument preserving the baroque architecture and treasures of that era. The ancient walls, brick archways, and tile corridors reflect the history of the original Casa Santo Domingo. Today, part of the ruins has been transformed into Antigua’s only five-star hotel, which opened in 1989.
- Cerro de la Cruz - This is our second stop. As you approach the cross monument, enjoy the refreshing breeze amidst trees, doves, and woodpeckers. This tranquil viewpoint offers a chance to unwind from daily life. Capture the stunning views of Antigua Guatemala and its three volcanoes with your camera. Share these cherished moments with loved ones!
- Iglesia de La Merced - After visiting Cerro de la Cruz, a short bus ride will take you to La Iglesia de la Merced. Imagine standing before this stunning yellow and white church, built in 1749, a prime example of Guatemalan baroque architecture. You’ll surely capture amazing photos of this remarkable site.
- Arco de Santa Catalina - Next, we visit the most iconic spot in Antigua Guatemala: The Arch Street, home to the Santa Catalina Arch. This location is the emblem of Antigua and features prominently on postcards. Originally constructed by the Santa Catarina Mártir Convent in 1693, it holds a secret you’ll uncover on this exclusive tour. Prepare for breathtaking photos!
- The Plaza Central Park - Just two blocks from the Santa Catalina Arch, we will begin our exploration of Antigua’s Central Park, known locally as Plaza Central. This area is steeped in history. It feels like stepping back in time, surrounded by the first national palace, the first Cathedral of Guatemala, and the mermaid’s fountain at the park’s center. The Cathedral’s construction began in 1545, and after an earthquake, it was inaugurated in 1680. It was designated a Cathedral in 1743 and was the most opulent in Central America at the time. The Santa Marta earthquake in 1773 left it in ruins, but the facade has been restored, and the ruins are open for visits. Are you ready for this unforgettable experience?
- Jade Maya - Our next destination is Jade Maya, the premier place to learn about jade’s 3000-year history in Guatemala. The Mayans, a culture rich in charm and wisdom, valued jade as a symbol of life, fertility, and power, even more than gold. Dive into the captivating history of this “eternal life rock.”
- Centro Cultural La Azotea - Centro Cultural La Azotea is a museum complex located in a 150-year-old coffee mill and plantation, just 5 minutes from Antigua. Attractions include an educational Coffee Museum with a fully operational 19th-century coffee mill, a coffee plantation tour, and an industrial coffee mill in full operation (Dec-Mar). It also features a Museum of Mayan Music and Instruments, an exhibit of Mayan textiles and customs, and a recreation of a Mayan village showcasing its architecture, construction materials, and regional botanicals.
