Meteora - The Metéora monasteries rise majestically from a dreamlike landscape of rocky megaliths in the Thessaly Valley plains, offering a breathtakingly surreal and serenely spiritual experience. Hermits first arrived in this secluded part of Greece as early as the 11th century to seek solitude and divine contemplation. By the 14th century, Christian Orthodox monks began constructing monasteries here. Originally, 24 monasteries were built, clinging to the edges of steep cliffs or perched atop sheer sandstone formations up to 300 meters high. With their lofty heights and almost mystical inaccessibility, the Metéora monasteries appear to ascend towards the heavens, symbolizing humanity’s quest for holiness. Modest attire is required; women are advised to wear long skirts and long sleeves. If needed, skirts will be provided upon entry.
