From his visits with his older brother in the late 1950s until his move to New York in 1974, David Bowie was a rising figure in Soho’s music scene. The foundation of his future success can be traced back to this period. He played in R&B bands such as The King Bees, The Manish Boys, Davy Jones and The Lower Third, The Buzz, and The Riot Squad. Bowie then embarked on a solo career, releasing an album reminiscent of Anthony Newley in 1967. In Soho, he met Lindsay Kemp, which led to his mime phase and the formation of the folk trio, Feathers. His subsequent band, Hype, featured Tony Visconti and Mick Ronson. Bowie’s first hit, “Space Oddity,” was followed by the formation of The Spiders From Mars. All of his iconic early 70s work was recorded at Trident Studios in Soho. Without a decade of growth and challenges in this area, would he have become the same artist? This tour explores the locations that influenced and shaped Bowie in the 1960s and 70s, paving the way for his rise to stardom.
