The Great Pyramid of Giza, also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops, is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex near modern-day Giza in Greater Cairo, Egypt. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one to remain largely intact.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, now buried beneath the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, but the site has not been excavated.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple yielded several statues of Khafre, some of which were found in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860.
- Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple.
- Great Sphinx - The Great Sphinx of Giza, often referred to simply as the Sphinx, is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with a lion’s body and a human head. Facing directly from west to east, it stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx is generally believed to represent the pharaoh Khafre.
Carved from the bedrock, the original shape of the Sphinx has been restored with layers of blocks. It measures 73 meters (240 feet) long from paw to tail, 20 meters (66 feet) high from the base to the top of the head, and 19 meters (62 feet) wide at its rear haunches. It is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of the pharaoh Khafre (c. 2558–2532 BC).
- Giza Plateau - Offers a panoramic view of all the pyramids and is the best spot for taking photos.
- Panoramic view of the Pyramids - This is the best place to take pictures of all the pyramids, as it is the highest point in the Giza area, providing a panoramic view.
- Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids - Visit Sakkara, located only 27 km southwest of Cairo. See the Step Pyramid, built for King Zoser, which is considered an important part of the evolution of pyramids, transitioning from the simple mastaba to its well-known form.
- Step Pyramid of Djoser - Saqqara, or Sakkara, is a vast ancient burial ground in Egypt, serving as the necropolis for the ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis. Saqqara features numerous pyramids, including Djoser’s step pyramid, built during the Third Dynasty, which is the oldest complete stone building complex known in history. Another 16 Egyptian kings built pyramids at Saqqara, which are now in various states of preservation or dilapidation. High officials added private funeral monuments to this necropolis throughout the entire pharaonic period. It remained an important site for non-royal burials and cult ceremonies for more than 3,000 years, well into Ptolemaic and Roman times.
The tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel.
- Memphis and Sakkara - Memphis was the first capital of ancient Egypt. After the unification of the south and north, King Mena chose this area as the capital due to its strategic location, serving as the gateway between the north and south. The city was founded in 3100 BC.
- Pyramid of Teti - Explore the ancient wonders of Egypt with a visit to the Pyramid of Teti. This historical site, dating back to the Old Kingdom period, showcases the architectural prowess of the ancient Egyptians.
