The Giza pyramid complex includes the Great Pyramid (also known as the Pyramid of Cheops or Khufu, built around 2580 – 2560 BC), the slightly smaller Pyramid of Khafre (or Chephren) a few hundred meters to the southwest, and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaure (or Mykerinos) a bit farther southwest.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex features a valley temple, now buried under the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, but the site remains unexcavated. The valley temple was linked to a causeway, which was mostly destroyed during the village’s construction.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple revealed several statues of Khafre, some of which were found in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860.
- Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex comprises a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple.
- Great Sphinx - The Sphinx dates back to the reign of King Khafre. In the New Kingdom, Amenhotep II dedicated a new temple to Hauron-Haremakhet, which was later expanded by subsequent rulers.
- The Egyptian Museum in Cairo - The Egyptian Museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East and holds the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities worldwide. The museum’s extensive collection ranges from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman Era.
The building’s architect was chosen through an international competition in 1895, the first of its kind, and was won by French architect Marcel Dourgnon. The museum was inaugurated in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II and has become a historic landmark in downtown Cairo, housing some of the world’s most magnificent ancient masterpieces.
Among the museum’s unparalleled collection are the complete burials of Yuya and Thuya, Psusennes I, the treasures of Tanis, and the Narmer Palette, which commemorates the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under one king. The museum also features splendid statues of the great kings Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Khan el-Khalili (Arabic: خان الخليلي) is a renowned bazaar and souq in Cairo’s historic center. Established as a trade hub during the Mamluk era and named after one of its historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has become a major attraction for both tourists and Egyptians. It is also home to many Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs. Originally, Khan el-Khalili referred to a single building in the area; today, it denotes the entire shopping district.
The tour concludes with a drop-off at the customer’s hotel in Cairo.
