- Piazza Caricamento - The Aquarium of Genoa features 43 tanks, including 4 open-air ones in the Cetacean Pavilion, covering a total area of 27,000 square meters. It houses approximately 15,000 animals from 400 different species, including fish, marine mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, all in environments that replicate their natural habitats for educational purposes.
- Centro storico di Genova - Genoa’s historic center is the heart of the old city, characterized by a labyrinth of medieval alleys known as caruggi.
- Piazza Raffaele De Ferrari - This is Genoa’s main square, located in the city’s center. It serves as the commercial, financial, and economic hub, as well as the focal point for significant city events. The square’s current design emerged in the early 20th century, with the construction of three streets converging from the east: via XX Settembre (1892-1901), via Dante, and via Petrarca (1901-1915), along with four large eclectic-style buildings, built between 1899 and 1923, housing companies and institutions. Opposite these are the neoclassical buildings designed by Carlo Barabino in the early 19th century, including the Carlo Felice theater (1827) and the Palazzo dell’Accademia ligustica di belle arti (1831).
- Piazza della Vittoria - Piazza della Vittoria is one of Genoa’s most central and largest squares. The area around the square has been inhabited since ancient times. Before its construction in the 1930s, this flat area existed.
- Boccadasse - This ancient seaside village in Genoa features pastel-colored houses clustered around a small bay. Despite being surrounded by the city, it has retained its historic charm, appearing much as it did a century or two ago. Some fishermen still practice their traditional trade.
- Corso Italia - This is one of Genoa’s main thoroughfares, stretching approximately 2.2 km along the sea. Built in the early 20th century, it quickly became a popular spot for Sunday strolls, earning its reputation as the city’s premier promenade.
- Via XX Settembre - Constructed in the late 19th century, this street was created by rectifying and widening via Giulia and via della Consolazione to provide a new eastern route, addressing the city’s urban expansion needs. The street’s name was a topic of debate until citizens’ desire to commemorate the historic Fall of Rome prevailed. Mayor Andrea Podestà strongly supported the street, despite opposition from residents due to necessary demolitions, including the Rimedio church and Sant’Andrea prison.
- Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta di Carignano - This basilica, located atop the Carignano hill, is a renowned Genoese work by Galeazzo Alessi and a prime example of Renaissance architecture. Inside, sculptures by Pierre Puget and Filippo Parodi are celebrated masterpieces of Genoese Baroque. Its prominent position makes it visible from many parts of the city, despite being partially obscured by modern buildings. Construction began in the mid-16th century and continued into the following centuries.
- Piazza Corvetto - One of Genoa’s largest and most elegant squares, Piazza Corvetto features gardens and flower beds leading to the nearby Acquasola park and Villetta di Negro. At its center stands an imposing equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy. The Franzoniana Library is located here, along with the Duse and Politeama theaters, the Mazzini Gallery, and Villetta Dinegro. The square’s pedestrian underpasses are periodically adorned with temporary galleries, known as Falsi d’autore, featuring reproductions of works by artists like Van Gogh, Kandinsky, and Magritte.
- Spianata Castelletto - This residential neighborhood on the hills overlooks Genoa’s historic center. The area, developed in the mid-19th century, stretches between Piazza Goffredo Villa and the Luigi Montaldo belvedere, offering panoramic views of the historic center’s rooftops, the ancient port, “Strada Nuova” (via Garibaldi), and the municipal offices with hanging gardens designed by Franco Albini in the 1950s. This view, captured in early 20th-century photos, is one of Genoa’s most iconic images.
- Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato - This church is a prime example of Genoese late mannerism and early 17th-century Baroque art.
- Via Balbi - One of Genoa’s main streets, designed in 1585, it marked an urban planning shift, moving luxury residences from the historic center to quieter, less developed areas.
- Villa del Principe - A significant historic villa in Genoa, built in the 16th century outside the city walls. The villa’s various interventions and layers make a unified definition challenging.
- City Sightseeing Genova - The tour concludes here, where visitors can choose to use their Hop On Hop Off ticket as desired.
