Arrival - Garni Temple - Geghard Monastery
The Monastery of Geghard - Geghard Monastery stands as one of Armenia’s most extraordinary spiritual and architectural gems. Situated at the entrance of the Azat Valley, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is partially hewn into the surrounding cliffs, harmonizing seamlessly with the striking natural landscape.
Established in the 4th century and expanded in the 13th, Geghard is renowned for its rock-hewn chapels, intricate carvings, and sacred ambiance. The name “Geghard” translates to “spear,” alluding to the legendary relic once housed here — the spear that pierced Christ’s side during the Crucifixion.
Visitors are enchanted by the monastery’s enigmatic beauty, the resonant sound of sacred hymns within its stone walls, and the stunning views of the surrounding gorge. Geghard is not only a marvel of medieval Armenian architecture but also a place where faith, history, and nature converge in harmony.
Garni Temple - The Temple of Garni is one of Armenia’s most iconic landmarks and the sole standing Greco-Roman colonnaded temple in the post-Soviet region. Constructed in the 1st century AD, it was dedicated to the sun god Mihr and served as the summer residence of the Armenian kings.
Dramatically perched above the Azat River Gorge, the temple provides breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the renowned “Symphony of Stones.” Its classical columns and intricate basalt construction beautifully showcase ancient craftsmanship and Armenia’s connection to both pagan and Hellenistic traditions.
Today, Garni stands as a symbol of Armenia’s pre-Christian heritage — offering a rare glimpse into the country’s ancient past, where history, architecture, and nature merge into a truly inspiring scene.
Khor Virap - Etchmiadzin - Zvartnots - Departure
Khor Virap - The Khor Virap Monastery is one of the most sacred and frequently visited pilgrimage sites in Armenia. Situated in the Ararat Valley, it offers a stunning view of Mount Ararat, the biblical resting place of Noah’s Ark, and holds profound spiritual and historical significance.
According to tradition, Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned here for 13 years in a deep underground dungeon before converting King Trdat III and leading Armenia to become the world’s first Christian nation in 301 AD.
Today, visitors can descend into the very pit where Gregory was held and experience the profound sense of faith and endurance that this site represents. Khor Virap’s tranquil setting and panoramic scenery make it a highlight of any journey through Armenia.
The Churches of Echmiadzin and the Archaeological Site of Zvartnots - The city of Ejmiatsin (Vagharshapat) is the spiritual heart of the Armenian Apostolic Church and home to some of the country’s oldest and most revered religious monuments. The main Mother See of Holy Ejmiatsin, founded in the early 4th century, is considered the world’s first Christian cathedral and serves as the residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians. Nearby, the St. Hripsime and St. Gayane churches complete this sacred ensemble, each reflecting Armenia’s early Christian heritage and timeless architectural elegance.
Just outside the city lies the Zvartnots Cathedral, a 7th-century architectural masterpiece and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though now in ruins, its circular design and majestic setting with Mount Ararat in the background continue to inspire awe — a symbol of Armenia’s golden age of faith and art.
