- The Monastery of Geghard - Named after the holy lance that pierced Christ’s side during the crucifixion, this World Heritage-listed monastery is carved into the rock face of the Azat River Gorge. According to legend, it was founded in the 4th century, and its oldest surviving chapel dates back to the 12th century. The highly atmospheric Surp Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God Church) dates from 1215 and features exquisite carvings; its adjoining gavit (vestibule) with its nine arches was constructed between 1215 and 1225.

Garni Pagan Temple is a spectacular example of classical Hellenistic architecture, erected by the Armenian king Tirdates I in the 1st century AD. This is where the Armenian sun god Mihr was venerated two millennia ago.
Further along in the Azat gorge, you’ll discover Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Part of the complex is hewn out of a colossal basalt boulder. Geghard translates from ancient Armenian as ‘spear’. The renowned spear reported to have pierced Jesus Christ has been preserved here for half a millennium.
