‘Little Africa’ designates a key part of the city’s coastline, which has been forever shaped by the influence of African culture and the Black community. This has not just affected the history of Rio de Janeiro, but of Brazil as a whole.
It was a haven for Black individuals from across the nation, usually under the warm welcome of ‘Aunt Ciata’, a central figure in this historical narrative. Through this tour of ‘Little Africa’, you’ll also explore the ‘Tia Ciata’ Cultural Center, Museum of New Blacks, Cais do Valongo, a hanging garden, and we’ll conclude at Pedra do Sal. This finale offers both a rich historical experience and a variety of superb bars and restaurants serving traditional Afro-Brazilian cuisine.
