Highlights
  • Gallipoli - We start here and finish here.
Gallipoli is a fisherman town, that had his glory thank to the export of olive oil that back in the medieval time was not sold for food purposes but for another reason and we will let you discover which!

  • Sannicola - We will stop in this little village to visit the underground olive mill from the 17th century.

  • Galatone - Along secondary roads, among olive trees and dry stone local constructions (trulli and pajare), we’ll reach Galatone with its imposing Norman castle, the Church of the Crucifix - masterpiece of Leccese baroque style - and the noble palace.

  • Porto Selvaggio - Porto Selvaggio, is a well preserved natural park with clear water where it is impossible not to jump in! There are sources of spring water mixing with the sea water. We stop for a swim and a lunch break.

  • Museo Civico Messapico - Un tuffo nella cultura messapica attraverso antichi sepolcri e una esposizione museale molto curata

Additional Information

Gallipoli and its inland still retain traces of the wealth that the lamp oil trade generated for centuries. First stop is at Alezio for a tasting in a cheese farm, then we go on to Tuglie for the amazing Radio Museum (all the items, including telegraphs, are still in working order!) or for the Museum of Rural Life. Heading back toward the coast, in the Porto Selvaggio Natural Reserve we have a picnic lunch (not included) in the shade of the pine forest and, for those who feel like it, a refreshing swim in the cool spring waters. On the way back to Gallipoli we stop in Santa Caterina to taste one of the best ice cream of the region (they’re specialized in “salty pistacchios”, “almond and figs” and “chocolate cream”). We arrive in Gallipoli by the sunset.

Gallipoli and countryside bike tour - We arranged our bike trip with an outside travel agent and we were connected to Salento Bici Tour. Carlos was a terrific guide and very knowledgeable about the area. The ride was casual and relaxed (exactly what we were looking for!) we ended the ride at his parents farm for a delicious and fun cooking class. Can't wait to come back and ride for a week with this company.
