This hike links two of the highest peaks on Madeira Island. It is a breathtaking route featuring tunnels and sections with steep ascents and descents, providing spectacular views of the island’s central massif. Hikers can also spot various birds, some unique to Macaronesia, such as the island canary (Serinus canaria), the Berthelot’s pipit (Anthus berthelottii madeirensis), and the plain swift (Apus unicolor).
Near the Pico Ruivo shelter, the PR 1.2 trail leads to Achada do Teixeira. At Achada do Teixeira, visitors can view the basaltic rock formation known as “Man in Foot,” located on the descent after passing the Achada do Teixeira shelter.
