Highlights

Tomonoura Museum of History and Folklore - Tomonoura (鞆の浦) is a port town located at the southern tip of Fukuyama City in Hiroshima Prefecture. Nestled in a bay facing the Seto Inland Sea, this charming port town boasts a quaint, old-fashioned fishing village ambiance with a serene and relaxed vibe. Tomonoura is part of the Setonaikai National Park.

Tomonoura thrived in the days of sailboats, when merchant ships navigating the Seto Inland Sea would anchor at its port while waiting for favorable tides. The town center buzzed with maritime activity, fostering flourishing industries such as the production of “homeishu,” a medicinal liquor made from shochu and 16 types of herbs, reputed to promote longevity.

Fukuyama and Area - Mami was very proactive in reaching out to ascertain my wishes and create a schedule. From the moment we meet she made me feel comfortable and made sure to share where we were going, share information about each site as we tour some great historical sites. Lunch was very Japanese, that was exquisite. A try out of a couple of herb sale houses made the day. We traveled by train, learning how to use the ticket machine, bus again to learn the etiquette and finally a ferry. Of my travels this tour made it all special!!
