Hakata and Fukuoka: A Bicycle Tour of Two Towns
Fukuoka is composed of two towns, each with its own unique history. Hakata thrived as Japan’s oldest international port, serving as a hub for trade and diplomacy, and was the starting point for Japanese envoys traveling to Sui and Tang China in ancient times. Across the Naka River lies the castle and castle town constructed by Kuroda Nagamasa, a Sengoku period warlord, alongside his father Josui.
During this tour, participants and their guide will explore two distinct cultural areas: a merchant town and a castle town, delving into the origins and history of Fukuoka.
One of the highlights of cycling is the ability to traverse paths and rivers inaccessible by car, and to visit hidden spots known only to locals. This tour provides a richer and more authentic experience of Fukuoka, enabling participants to cover more ground efficiently than on foot, while engaging all five senses with the city’s atmosphere and seasonal fragrances.
