Excellent visit to volcano and onsen - It was very good, we really enjoyed it. The tour guides were informative, friendly and helpful. We felt like they were paying attention to us, which was very reassuring. Especially enjoyed the Onsen/hot spring and the volcano, as both were very good. All in all an excellent day spent on the tour.

Great tour - Incredible visit to Aso, seeing a volcano crater with steam coming up live is a site to see, the bells went off as chemical levels went up but we were there long enough to see the pure beauty

Awe Inspiring Experience - Our trip included visits to the Kumamoto Castle, Grasslands adjacent to Aso Volcano, the volcano itself and a market in the town of Aso's train station. Overall, we had a wonderful time. Helen, our guide, did a great job telling us about the places we were visiting. Our bus was large and comfortable. Despite the size of our group (34 people), Helen did a great job in keeping on track for time. One thing to be aware of; based on conditions at the Volcano, the tour guide will adjust the schedule to give you the best chance of seeing the volcano from the rim. But conditions are constantly changing and it is possible that you might not be able to get close to the edge, depending on gaseous releases. When we were visiting, approximately 1/2 way through our stay (each tour group is allowed 25 minutes on the Volcano), the authorities had to evacuate the viewing area at the rim, due to a gaseous release. We were still able to view the crater from an overlook not too far away (it did require walking up some steps to get there). So, it actually turned into a little adventure, as we viewed the crater from two different locations. But if we had been one group later, we would have only been able to see it from the overlook. This is no criticism of the tour or the tour company, just an acknowledgement that we humans don't have control over Mother Nature. The grasslands portion was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. There were many horses grazing in the pasture and the view of the volcano from a nearby hilltop was pretty cool. But the main reason for the stop was as a staging point for the volcano tour and an opportunity to eat lunch at one of three restaurants and pick up a souvenir, if desired. This is a long tour (10 hours), so the stop at the restaurant was welcome. If you don't feel like eating at the restaurant, I recommend that you bring your own bento, as it can be pretty late by the time you get back to Hakata. There will be plenty of other opportunities to get drinks and light refreshments, however. The tour does not include tickets to the Kumamoto Castle. You must purchase them when you get there (only 400 yen - less than $3 - per person, so, not a big deal; but bring cash), if you want to go inside. The tour guide will collect the money from everyone who wants to go and pass out the tickets. If you choose not to go inside the castle, there is an open air market/souvenir plaza at the base of the castle. We went inside and found it very interesting, though most of the signage is in Japanese, so it would be a good idea to get the English guide brochure if you can't read Japanese. Overall, the tour was well worth it, but we really would have needed more time to see and learn about all the displays in the building. Overall, the only real concern we had was the distance we had to travel on the bus to get to and from the attractions. That is why we didn't give this 5 stars. Because of the commute, 4 of the 10 hours we spent were riding the bus. If you can, I would recommend taking this tour from the city of Kumamoto, if possible, as it would eliminate the extensive transit time from Hakata down to the area where the attractions are.
