This tour takes you off the beaten path and can only be led by a local guide. Over 2,000 years ago, a shaman named Xi Fu, who served China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, developed this pilgrimage trail.
Qin Shi Huang’s final wish was to achieve immortality, so he tasked Xi Fu with finding the elixir of life from the sacred eastern mountain. Numerous legends about Xi Fu exist throughout Japan and Fujiyoshida. According to historical documents, Xi Fu noted that Fujiyoshida had seven shrines and a main shrine where ceremonies for ascending to the emperor were held. The Japanese emperor’s title, “Tennou,” translates to the Northern Dragon, Hokushin, symbolizing the deification of Polaris and the Big Dipper.
