Fatima - This Marian pilgrimage site commemorates the apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, which took place in 1917 and were officially recognized in 1930. The location was a rural property known as Cova da Iria, owned by Lucia’s parents, who generously donated it to the sanctuary. It was here that five of the six apparitions occurred.
The Sanctuary features the Chapel of Apparitions, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Prayer Room, and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity. Enhancing the Sanctuary are the Retreat Houses of Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, along with the Paul VI Pastoral Center.
It stands as one of the most significant Marian shrines of the Catholic Church globally and is a leading international destination for religious tourism, attracting approximately six million visitors annually. It has been visited by Popes Paul VI (1967), John Paul II (1982, 1991, and 2000), Benedict XVI (2010), and Francis (2017 and 2023).
-
Valinhos Sanctuary - Just a short distance from the Sanctuary is Valinhos, a quaint village where the children and their families resided and from where they would take the animals to graze. The village is remarkably well-preserved. The homes of Francisco and Jacinta (siblings) and Lucia de Jesus (their cousin) are located here.
-
Convento de Cristo - Continuing the Templar Tour towards Tomar, the visit begins at the Templar Castle/Convent of Christ, which served as the headquarters of the Order of the Temple until 1314, and the Order of Christ from 1357. The castle, dating back to 1160, includes the octagonal Charola, a Romanesque sanctuary with Eastern influences.
-
Aqueduto dos Pegoes - Before returning to Lisbon, a visit is made to an aqueduct that supplied water to the Castle/Convent of Christ. Located 6 km from Tomar, the Aqueduct of Pegões is an outstanding example of 16th-century architecture.
