A Spiritual Start in Fátima

Our journey began in the serene town of Fátima, a place steeped in spiritual significance. As we approached the Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, I could feel the weight of history and devotion in the air. The kids were fascinated by the stories of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fátima, and our guide, Miguel, was a treasure trove of information. He shared tales of the shepherd children and the miraculous events of 1917, captivating us all.

The shrine itself was a marvel, and we took part in the tradition of lighting candles, a moment of reflection and peace. The children were particularly intrigued by the exhibit featuring a piece of the Berlin Wall, a tangible connection to history that sparked many questions and discussions. It was a perfect blend of education and spirituality, setting the tone for the rest of our adventure.

Gothic Grandeur in Batalha

Next, we ventured to the Batalha Monastery, a stunning example of late Gothic architecture. The intricate details of the monastery’s façade were awe-inspiring, and Miguel’s passion for the history of the site was infectious. He explained the significance of the Battle of Aljubarrota and how the monastery was built to commemorate the Portuguese victory.

The kids were particularly taken with the various altars and the stories behind them. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to learn about Portugal’s rich history in a setting that was both beautiful and educational. As we wandered through the cloisters, I couldn’t help but appreciate how this trip was not only a visual feast but also a chance for the kids to engage with history in a meaningful way.

Coastal Delights in Nazaré and Obidos

Our journey continued to the coastal town of Nazaré, where we enjoyed a delightful seafood lunch by the beach. The seafood rice was a hit with everyone, and the fresh ocean breeze was invigorating. After lunch, we made our way to the top of the cliff to witness the breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean and the famous site of the world’s largest surfable wave. The kids were thrilled by the idea of such massive waves, and it was a perfect spot for some family photos.

Our final stop was the charming village of Obidos, a place that felt like stepping back in time. The cobblestone streets and colorful houses were enchanting, and the kids loved exploring the castle walls. We indulged in the local delicacy, “Ginginha” served in a chocolate cup, a sweet treat that was a hit with the whole family. Walking through Obidos was a delightful end to our day, a blend of history, culture, and fun that left us all with lasting memories.
